KARACHI Accoeding to a notification issued earlier this year, special powers awarded to the Pakistan Rangers by the Sindh government for a period of three months ended this Friday, April 14.
A 90-day extension had been granted to the Rangers in Karachi in January. The notificication granting Rangers special powers came into effect on January 16, 2017.
Under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997, Sindh allowed Pakistan Rangers to carry out raids and arrest suspects.
Rangers were awarded these powers to decrease terrorism, extortion, target killings, kidnappings and various other crimes in Karachi.
However, after the expiration of their special powers, the paramilitary force would require authorization from the provincial administration to carry out its operations.
